The Valwood volleyball team swept the Sherwood Christian Eagles 3-0 (25-12, 25-13, 25-19) before an enthusiastic crowd during its first home match of the season Thursday.
Energized by the student section, the Valiants (13-1) dominated early in the first set with three kills from sophomore Korinne Johnson. Freshman Ellie Griner led the Valiants offensively during the second set with four kills and an ace.
During the final set, freshman Anna Alvarado stepped up to the service line and led the Valiants on a seven-point run. Midway through the final set, the Valiants faltered and lost the lead after a string of unforced errors, but quickly regained control of the game.
Aggressive serving proved to be more than the Eagles could handle, as aces were tallied by Nicole Manwell (six), Erin Moss (three), Kennedy Kimbro (four), Makayla Yates (one) and Marleigh Carson (three).
A solid and consistent Sherwood team couldn’t compete with the offensive connection between Kimbro and Moss. The duo connected contributed seven aces, 17 kills and 23 assists.
The Valiants play again at home Thursday against Colquitt County at 4:30 p.m. and North Florida Christian (Fla.) at 7:30 p.m.
