HAHIRA — Doesn’t every child deserve a happy birthday?
The Valwood fourth-grade class thinks so.
The fourth graders service project is aimed to help children in the community celebrate their special day regardless of their circumstances, according to school officials.
The idea is to assemble a “party in a bag” for a child in need, according to Valwood. Items that were collected in classrooms included crayons, notepads, bubbles, color pencils, pens, markers, party blowers, coloring books, story books, puzzles, birthday candles, streamers, Legos, birthday banner, toy car, small dolls, bouncy balls and stuffed animals.
The “party bag” finishing touch was a special birthday card designed by the fourth graders. The bags will be delivered to a local agency that serves families with small children, according to the release.
“Boys and girls in the community have birthdays every month, but when families find themselves struggling to meet needs, the extra money to celebrate a birthday may not be possible,” according to school officials. “It is a great way for our students to learn empathy in a concrete way by helping another child.”
