In June, Valwood senior Gavin Faucett was among 108 of Georgia’s brightest high school students sent on the 2014 Washington Youth Tour, a leadership program sponsored by the electric membership cooperatives (EMC’s) in Georgia, including Colquitt EMC, South Georgia’s local branch.
The Youth Tour teaches students about U.S. history, government and careers in public service. The primary purpose of the tour is to teach students the values every electric cooperative brings to the communities they serve and to promote civic involvement.
Before departing for Washington, D.C., the group visited the Little White House in Warm Springs, GA, the retreat where many of his important decisions as president were formulated, including the plan to bring electricity to rural America.
Once in the nation’s capital, Faucette gained a valuable perspective on today’s important issues through personal visits to Capitol Hill, as well as tours of the Supreme Court, Smithsonian Museums, the FDR, Jefferson, Lincoln, MLK, Korean and Vietnam Veterans memorials and Arlington National Cemetery.
