Valwood’s Lower School is where a love of learning begins. It is a community where children develop a life-long love of learning as they build their self-esteem and cultivate their talents; a place where students are provided an atmosphere conducive to learning in a stimulating and nurturing environment. The lower school includes Pre-K through fifth grades.
Lower School faculty brings the student’s world into the classroom, creating excitement by filling their home-away-from-home with adventure and challenge. We strive to instill in our students the desire to perform to their fullest potential and to develop in them that thirst for knowledge which leads to success and fulfillment.
Each grade presents a class play where everyone participates and has a mini-public speaking experience that will serve them well as they mature. Lower school students also experience cross-grade interactions, when students from the upper and middle schools come and read to them or spend time in their classrooms.
In the Lower School, we believe in celebrating childhood and all of the moments that make it so special.
Reading, writing, and critical thinking skills play a prominent role in our rigorous curriculum. Additionally, your child will have classes in choral and instrumental music, art, science, Spanish, technology, and library which are incorporated into our core curriculum.

Extended Day is for pre-K through fifth grade families who need child care after the regular school day ends. It lasts until 5:30 p.m. Pre-K para-pro Natasha Shaw will oversee Extended Day. During Extended Day, students are given a snack, get outdoor play time, have time to work on homework and have the option to participate in special area classes led by those teachers – Library, Art, or Spanish. Extended Day is not available on school holidays or days when the entire school dismisses at Noon. Please contact Natasha Shaw with any questions. Homework Hour is held Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday* for one hour past their regular dismissal time for 1st through 5th grades depending on interest. Students work independently and may also get assistance when needed.
